ISLAMABAD, Nov 19: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Monday emphasized Pakistan’s willingness to cooperate fully with all efforts under the UN aegis towards finding a political settlement and formation of a broadbased, multi-ethnic representative government in Afghanistan, acceptable to Afghans and friendly towards all its neighbours.

This was stated by the President during a meeting by visiting Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Maher, who is now on a two-day visit, as special envoy of President Hosni Mubarak. At the request of Mr Maher, President Musharraf apprised the visiting dignitary of the latest developments in Afghanistan.

Ahmed Maher called on President General Pervez Musharraf to deliver a personal message of President Mubarak and to convey Egypt’s solidarity, support and understanding for Pakistan’s principled and courageous decision to join the international coalition in the fight against terrorism.

He also conveyed President Mubarak’s offer to work together with Pakistan in the fight against terrorism and for the return of durable peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Ahmed Maher also briefed the President on the continued Israeli aggression against Palestinian Authority territories which has heightened tension and led to a dangerous escalation of violence in the Middle East which seriously jeopardized the peace process.

The President asked the Egyptian Foreign Minister to convey his sincere gratitude to President Mubarak for the fraternal gesture of sending his Special Envoy and for Egypt’s firm support for Pakistan at this critical juncture. The President also renewed his earlier invitation to President Mubarak to visit Pakistan at the earliest opportunity.—APP
