LAHORE, Oct 10: Pakistani golfers continued their winning streak grabbing yet another title when they beat defending champions Sri Lanka to win the one-day Jaywardhene Trophy which was part of the 44th amateur championship of Pakistan at the Lahore Gymkhana course on Sunday.
Pakistan comprising Aimal Zaman, Shahid Javed Khan and Vaqas Ahmad earned an aggregate of 216 against Sri Lanka's total of 226 to win the trophy which was introduced in 1989.
The same team had won the international team championship just a day before beating India with three stroke lead. Earlier this year, Pakistan had won the Saarc championship in Lahore and international team championship in Karachi.
Aimal was hero of Pakistan's win when he produced the best card of the day, three under 69. Aimal started the day from the 10th hole badly as he had a double bogey but enhanced his performance with fine hitting and putting.
Under windy conditions which later brought heavy rain to create problems for the golfers, Aimal earned a birdie at the 14th and 16th and an eagle at the par-5's 17th. Coming back he had a birdie at the 1st hole before losing a stroke at the 8th and the 9th.
Shahid Javed Khan, who has been performing excellently produced a card of par-72 and made a good effort when their third ally Vaqas Ahmad played tamely. Shahid had two birdies and as many bogeys to have a par card. But Vaqas's card was expensive as he played four-over-76. Tissa Chandardasa played well for Sri Lanka to have best card of one under-71. The other two players played sluggishly. Mithun Perera played four-over-76 while K Prabagaran six-over-79.
In the individual section, both Pakistanis Shahid Javed and Aimal Zaman are close rivals of each other. Shahid is enjoying only one stroke lead with three-day aggregate of six-under-210 (67,71,72).
Aimal's three-day break-up is 68,74,69=211 and it would be any body's game as both understand each other's tactics because they have been representing the country in a team for the last couple of years.
Tissa Chandardasa has occupied the third spot with aggregate 215 (71,72,72). Indian golfers failed to excel and it seemed the windy condition effected their performance. Vikrant Chopra and Amarbir Singh were tied with Aimal Zaman at the second spot when they started. But only Aimal retained his spot while the two Indians were relegated to the fourth jointly with identical score of two-over-218 each. Both grabbed expensive card of three-over-75 apiece.
M Milon of Bangladesh (223) and Mithun Perera of Sri Lanka (224) were trailing at the 5th and the 6th spots, respectively. In the ladies section, Shruti Khanna of India maintained her top position after entering another fine card of par-72 to make two-day aggregate 144.
Miss Jamila Jabbar from Pakistan was far from the leader with aggregate of 165. Abbas Mirza (Islamabad) won the senior over-55 years age trophy with two-day aggregate 162 (79,83). Major U.Najmi (168) and Javed Khan (169) earned second and third spot.
In juniors section, 15-year old M Rahman won the title with aggregate 237 (78,77,82) and Daniyal Jehangir with 242 (76,80,86) remained runner-up. Monday is the last day when only the men's and ladies's individual events will be played.
