KARACHI, May 23: Six persons including a political worker were shot dead and four others were wounded in different parts of the city on Monday. Two persons were shot dead in Sector 9-E of Orangi Town.
Police said that four friends were getting their vehicle repaired at a workshop when unknown persons on a motorcycle pulled up and opened fire at them. Subsequently, Nasir and Ehsan suffered serious injuries and died before they could be shifted to hospital. Their two associates Fahim and Nadeem were wounded. They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
An FIR was lodge against unknown persons at Orangi Town police station.
In Al Falah police limits, an activist of Muttahida Qaumi Movement was shot dead.
Police said that Shahabuddin, 30, was shot at by unidentified motorcyclists. The victim was rushed to the JPMC where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
In Liaquatabad, a young man was shot dead and a shopkeeper was wounded when armed men on motorcycle opened fire at them near Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad.
Police said that Omar Imam, 22, died on the spot while the shopkeeper, Sarwar, was wounded. The injured and the body were taken to hospital for treatment and post-mortem examination respectively.
In Landhi, two persons were sprayed with bullets in the limits of Sharafi Goth.
Police said that Barkat and Arshad were outside an under construction house when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire and escaped. The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital where Barkat was pronounced dead. Arshad was referred to the JPMC after being provided with initial treatment. Police suspected some personal enmity as a possible motive behind the killing.
In Saddar, a dispenser was shot dead early on Monday morning.
Police said that Muhammad Ali, 35, was asleep in his house in Bazzatta Lanes. Unknown persons sneaked into his house and pumped a bullet in his head. Victim’s wife lodged an FIR against unknown persons. Police said that victim was a dispenser at a clinic in Quaidabad.
ACCIDENT: An elderly man died in a hit-and-run accident in Garden on Monday.
Police said that Saeed, 60, was crossing the main road near Shoe Market when he was hit by a speeding motorcyclist. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Hospital sources said the victim had suffered serious head injuries.
FIRE: Five buses were set on fire in Liaquatabad by unknown persons on Monday morning.
Police said that the incident occurred around 7:15am at Altaf Husain Brailvi Road where the buses were parked. When police and fire brigade reached the spot, three buses were completely gutted while two suffered partial damage. Four buses of route (7-H) were owned by Rafiq while a bus of route (7-C) was owned by Mobin, police said.
According to police, it was not an accident apparently, but some persons set the five vehicles on fire. “So far nothing substantial has come forward, but it could be a result of some personal enmity or work of extortionists,” said a police officer.
When contacted, a senior fire officer said that the fire was not result of any short circuit, but someone had set the buses on fire. “We have saved two vehicles, but three buses were completely gutted in the fire,” he confirmed.
Both the owners have not cast doubts on anyone and have preferred to lodge the FIR against unknown persons.
SEIZED: Police on Monday claimed to have seized counterfeit US $100,000 in Nazimabad and arrested four suspects from a café.
On a tip off, police nabbed four suspects from Café Zaiqa, Nazimabad, and seized the counterfeit currency from their car parked outside the café. The suspects were identified as Saleem, Zahid, Ashfaq and Siraj.
According to the police, Saleem was the main suspect who had brought the currency to Karachi from Darra Khyber. Rest of the three suspects were actually potential buyers of the currency, police added.
Police said that counterfeit currency was of exceptionally good quality and could not be detected through naked eye. The arrests were made through the joint efforts of Shamim Shaheed and Gul Bahar police stations.
