ISLAMABAD, June 13: Asma Jehangir, the chairperson of the Human Rights Commissionof Pakistan, said on Monday night that gang-rape victim Mukhtaran Mai had been shifted to an undisclosed location in Islamabad earlier in the day. Ms Jehangir claimed the adviser to the prime minister on women affairs, Nilofer Bakhtiar, had met Mukhtaran Mai and told her that the interior ministry wanted to look at her case afresh.

The HRCP chairperson said that Mai had called her at 2am on Sunday night and informed her that police wanted to take her to Lahore and then to Islamabad.

Ms Jehangir said she was told that DSP Maqbool of the Jatoi Police Station and an SHO had taken Mai and her friend Ms Nasim Akhtar to Lahore from Meerwala at 5am.

She said she was in contact with Mai till noon on Monday after which she lost contact.

The Human Rights Commissionof Pakistan chairperson demanded that Mai should be produced before an inter-parliamentary committee to prove that she had not been placed under house arrest.
