Turkey’s EU bid doubtful

Published June 23, 2005

BRUSSELS, June 22: European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso sowed fresh doubts on Wednesday about Turkey’s prospects of joining the EU, saying the bloc needed a serious debate about its future ties with Ankara.

Mr Barroso said the European Union should discuss the signal that French and Dutch voters had sent about Turkey’s accession when they rejected the EU constitution in referendums.

But he stressed the bloc should open membership talks with the Turks on Oct 3.—Reuters
