Afghans say 103 Taliban killed in southern fighting KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 23 (Reuters) - Afghan and U.S. forces have killed more than 100 Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan, interior ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal said Thursday. Most were killed by U.S. helicopter gunships as they fled a district on the border of Kandahar, Zabul and Uruzgan provinces seized by the Taliban last week, he said.(Posted @ 17:25 PST)

Afghans say surround senior Taliban commanders KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 23 (Reuters) - Afghan forces are closing in on a number of senior Taliban commanders after a big U.S.-backed offensive in southwestern Afghanistan that killed more than 100 militants, officials said on Thursday. The commanders included Mullah Dadullah, a member of the Taliban's 10-man leadership council headed by Mullah Mohammad Omar, and Mullah Brother another commander thought close to Omar, a Defence Ministry spokesman said. Qaeda says top Saudi militant killed in Iraq-Web DUBAI, June 23 (Reuters) - Iraq's al Qaeda leader said on Thursday that a senior Saudi militant, sheikh Abdullah al-Roshoud, wanted by Riyadh, has been killed in battles against U.S. forces in Iraq, according to a statement signed by Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, posted on the Internet. He left Saudi Arabia six weeks ago, and took part in the epic battles of Qaim , the statement said. World powers urge Israel to ease checkpoints LONDON, June 23 (Reuters) - World powers on Thursday urged Israel to allow Palestinians to move more freely around occupied territories, echoing a key demand from Palestinians ahead of the Jewish state's planned withdrawal from Gaza. The Quartet of the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations called on Israel "to take immediate steps, without endangering Israeli security, ... to facilitate rehabilitation and reconstruction by easing the flow of goods and people in and out of Gaza and the West Bank and between them." They also urged the Israelis and Palestinians to meet more frequently to hammer out plans for the mid-August Israeli pullout of settlers from Gaza. Over 30 dead in Baghdad bombs BAGHDAD, June 23 (Reuters) - Four car bombs shook Baghdad after dawn on Thursday, killing at least 17 people and wounding dozens, police said. After dark on Wednesday a triple car bombing claimed by al Qaeda hit a mainly Shi'ite district of the city, killing 18 and wounding 48. Police said a suicide car bomber killed three policemen and seven civilians when he drove at their patrol in the central commercial district of Karrada around 7 a.m. (0300 GMT). A second, similar attack killed seven civilians, they added. Two other cars exploded in the same area, each several minutes apart, one near a Shi'ite mosque. Police and medical sources put the number of wounded at between 23 and 50. Late on Wednesday, two police were killed in Baghdad and five people were wounded in a bomb attack on a patrol, the Defence Ministry said in a statement. On Thursday, two policemen were among three people killed in a car bomb attack at Tuz Kurmatu, the town close to the autonomous Kurdish region north of Baghdad, police said. (Posted @ 16:25 PST)

Two Turkish soldiers killed in landmine blast DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, June 23 (Reuters) - Two Turkish soldiers were killed and six wounded when their vehicle struck a landmine in Agri provincenear the Iranian border, security officials said on Thursday. Another official said the military separately launched a large-scale operation in nearby Siirt and Sirnak provinces, where PKK guerrillas have launched several attacks in recent weeks. London police probe Indian call centre fraud claim LONDON, June 23 (Reuters) - London police confirmed that they were investigating The Sun newspaper's claims Thursday that Britons' confidential personal details, including information about their bank accounts, credit cards, passports and driving licences, were being sold by criminals from Indian call centres. The newspaper said it had bought secret bank details of 1,000 Britons for just 3 pounds each from a computer expert in Delhi who said he had obtained the information from contacts working in call centres. G8 foreign ministers gather in London to prepare way for summit LONDON, June 23 (AFP) - Foreign ministers from the Group of Eight nations were gathering in London on Thursday for a one-day meeting to prepare the ground for the main summit of the industrialised nations' club in Scotland next month. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was joining host Jack Straw of Britain and the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia.
