Big Show outclasses favourite to capture feature event
LAHORE, Jan 1: Bay filly, Big Show, showed an impressive turn of speed to capture the New Year Cup featuring the 18th Lahore Winter Meeting to mark the advent of new year at the Racecourse on Sunday. Ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman and trained by Amjad Ali II, Big Show took a fine start and led the field all the way home to beat late rushing, Motivator by three clear lengths.
Hatam and Herry Can View completed the frame in the same order.
It was very strange that Motivator, who is considered a speedy animal while Big Show had the reputation of being a slow starter, both proved the reverse in today’s race.
Perhaps the chilly winds blowing across the Racecourse had an adverse affect on favourite Motivator while it suited Big Show.
The main supporting event, the Rohri Plate, a handicap race for imported thoroughbreds was won by long shot chestnut filly Free Fall ridden by Azam Hussain.
Using the runaway tactics Free Fall beat fancied Colonial Girl by one and a half length, who was ridden clumsily by Shahid Mustafa.
Ponente and Dixie Queen completed the board among seven runners left in the field after the last-minute withdrawal of Brummel and Calendar Girl from the race.
The new year race day was an eventful day.
In the second race bay gelding Dam Dama Dam won the race under riding boy Sajjad Hussain but lost it on objection lodged by jockey M. Hanif, the rider of mare Savera placed second for crossing near the distant post.
The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards upheld the race and disqualified Dam Dama Dam and awarded the race to Savera.
According to Hanif, riding boy Sajjad while crossing did not observe the rule for being two lengths ahead while doing so and blocked the free run of Savera.
Jockey Shahid Rehman was fined rupees two thousands (Rs 2000) for his rough riding.
Two fillies, Chandni and Dinner Guest, from the famous French sires, Highest Honor and Double Bed, respectively, opened their debut in races at the Racecourse.
Jockey Aamar Parvaiz, excelled among riders and brought in a brace of winners.
