SUKKUR, Jan 19: The in-charge of the WHO’s Sindh chapter, Dr Yahya Mustafa, on Thursday said four polio cases had been reported in Sindh – two in Larkana and one each in Ghotki and Sanghar districts. However, despite this, performance of Sindh with regard to eradicating polio was better as compared to other provinces, he added.

He was briefing District Nazim Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and officials of the health department.

Dr Mustafa stressed the need for launching a vigorous campaign to control polio.

He also emphasized the need for making radical changes in routine vaccination and said latest techniques should be adopted and people encouraged to visit health facilities themselves to get their children vaccinated against polio.

He said 603 teams of the health department would vaccinate 194,113 children against polio.

Arrangements for launching an anti-polio campaign from Jan 24 to 26 were also discussed.

MUHARRAM: District nazims of Sukkur, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Khairpur, Nawabshah and other parts of interior Sindh held meetings on Thursday to discuss steps to be taken to maintain law and order during Muharram.

The nazims directed police to ensure law and order during processions in their respective districts.

Representatives of different religious sects presented suggestions how to maintain peace and harmony during the month.

The meetings decided that no objectionable slogans and speeches should be delivered which could create hatred among different sects.

The meetings decided that processions would only pass through sanctioned routes and at the scheduled time.

It was also decided to form peace committees which would remain in touch with the district government and law-enforcement agencies during Muharram.

The meetings appealed to ulema belonging to different schools of thought to create harmony and peace through their speeches.

KILLED: A woman, Yasmin, daughter of Suhrab Chachar, was shot dead allegedly by her husband, Shahzado Chachar, on the pretext of karo-kari in Ghotki on Thursday.

Police registered a case against Shahzado.
