By Our Correspondent

SHEIKHUPURA, Feb 16: Following the death of a student in a road accident, hundreds of school and college students kept Sargodha road blocked for about an hour and pelted cars and buses with stones here on Thursday.

Reports said Rajab Ali, a first-year student at the Government Degree College, was travelling on the roof of a bus coming from Farooqabad. He lost his balance when he tried to alight from the moving bus and fell on the road. In the meantime, a speeding van ran over him while crossing the bus. He died on the way to a hospital.

As the news spread among other students, hundreds of them came out of their respective institutions and started to march on Lahore-Sargodha road. The enraged students destroyed the killer van and pelted the vehicular traffic with stones. They also blocked the road by burning tyres and erecting barricades for about an hour. The main business centres in the city remained closed in the wake of the incident.

Meanwhile, city police reached the spot and assured the students that a stern action would be taken against the bus and van drivers. The students dispersed after the assurance.
