Aziz to head UN panel
UNITED NATIONS, Feb 16: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz will head a 15-member panel on UN system-wide coherence in areas of development, humanitarian assistance, and environment, a UN spokesman announced here on Thursday.
Mr Aziz will co-chair the panel with Prime Ministers of Mozambique Luisa Dias Diogo and Jens Stoltenberg of Norway, the spokesman said.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan announced the formation of the panel which includes presidents, prime ministers and top officials of international financial institutions to explore how to restructure the United Nations system.
The study, which was called for in the ‘Outcome Document’ adopted by global leaders at the 2005 World Summit in New York, is intended to lay the groundwork for a fundamental restructuring of the UN’s operational work, complementing other major reform initiatives currently underway at the UN including the creation of a new peace-building commission, negotiations over the establishment of a new human rights council, and a proposal for comprehensive management reform that will shortly be unveiled by the UN secretary-general.
