KARACHI, Feb 26: Five-year-old mare, Smiling Face, made it two in a row when she lowered the colours of fancied four-year-old colt, Victory Symbol, in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Running alongside 15 aspirants after bay horse Prince Shahzad was withdrawn in the five furlongs concluding race, she outpaced Victory Symbol by two lengths to grab top honours.

Though she won with M. Nasir aboard, but could not impress with her run as she was home by eight lengths by the same rider in the last meeting.

Owner of Victory Symbol Adnan Azam Khan should blame himself for the defeat for changing riding boy Nasim Ahmed with Khalid Amin at the last moment that made all the difference.

Four-year-old colt, Baba Jani who returned with flying colours in his last outing, settled for third while mare Sweet Grandy completed the frame.

Owned by Tariq Majeed, Tom Cruise, as expected, sprinted to victory in the opener when he edged out Royal Beauty by two and a half lengths. Afzaal Prince secured third position.

Winner of Christmas Plate on Dec 25, mare Fly To The Sky returned to form by picking up the next race by half length. She overcame Lucky Step and Aie Bahar to register triumph.

Mujahid Ali piloted four-year-old filly, Makina, home outclassing sibling Excalibur by two lengths in the third race. Chestnut Moon Raker was beaten by distance to take third position while mare Bang On Target was placed fourth.

Chestnut Real Gift ridden by Riaz Muhammad surprised all and sundry by capturing the fourth race. He got the better of Kicking King by two lengths.

Bay horse Chand Aya who was joint favourite with thoroughbred Laurel captured the fifth race beating the latter by three quarter length.

The field was shortened to 10 contestants after Clapping was withdrawn.

In addition, rider of Khan The Great, Nasim Ahmed, was penalised by the authorities concerned and his license was withdrawn.

Eager Saint picked up the spoils beating Al Jarrar by seven lengths in the sixth race. The two were chased by New Ferrari who was placed third.

Mare Sonia also sprang a surprise when she toppled Deniro to clinch the seventh race.
