Tribute paid to anti-One Unit activists

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, March 4: Two functions were held here on Saturday to mark the day of March 4, 1967, when students protesting against One Unit were mercilessly beaten by police on the Hyderabad-Jamshoro road.

Sindh National Front organized a seminar on “National question and students politics”.

Noted writers and nationalist leaders stressed the need for constituting a “Shagird Ittehad” on the pattern of Sindh Qaumi Ittehad.

In his presidential speech, SNF leader Amir Bux Bhutto said that the workers and the peasants should struggle for the rights of Sindh whereas the students should concentrate on their studies.

He said that students should not sacrifice their future at the altar of politics.

He said that it was true that students could not remain silent when the people were being subjected to inhuman atrocities and they were forced to come out on the roads for which they deserved credit.

He said that instead of resolving the Balochistan imbroglio through talks, bullets were being used and added that the country was being destroyed in the name of democracy.

Ibrahim Joyo said that education and politics had a very close relationship and added that there was a great margin of improvement in both.

Rejecting the 1940 resolution, he said that there was a dire need of a new covenant which should guarantee complete provincial autonomy to the federating units.

Former student leader and eminent lawyer Yousuf Leghari said that the Sindhi nation had forgotten the heroes who had rendered tremendous sacrifices for Sindh.

Hameed Sindhi, SNC leader Hussain Bux Thebo, Awami Tehrik leader Abrar Qazi, SNF leader Gul Mohammad Jakhrani and Dr Dodo Mehiri also spoke on the occasion.

JSSF: Jeay Sindh Students Federation also organized a function at the Hyderabad press club.

The student leaders said that officials of the educational institutions and security forces had destroyed the entire educational system in Sindh.

Speaking as chief guest, JSQM leader Abdul Wahid Arisar said that the incident of March 4, 1967, had changed the course of Sindh’s politics.

He said that the main reason for the failure of students politics was the absence of ideology.

He said that the students had forgotten Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and they did not possess any political acumen.

He said that there were times when JSSF leaders used to secure positions but now they were lagging far behind in the pursuit of knowledge.

Dr Niaz Kalani said the students along with the workers had played a major role in the Russian revolution.

Sagar Hanif Burdi, Rooplo Choliani, Aslam Khairpuri, Darya Khan Leghari and Suriah Sindhi also spoke on the occasion.

Call to boycott western products: Speakers at a Tahaffz-i-Nazmoos Risalat conference has condemned publication of sacrilegious cartoons in European newspapers and urged people to boycott western products.

They appealed to people to observe a strike on March 3.

World Islami Mission chairman Shah Anas Noorani presided over the conference held at the Market chowk.
