LAHORE, April 5: Some senior police officers have said that recruitment of army officers in the department will not help improve its working and image. Reacting to a proposal to induct army officers in the main hierarchy of police, they told Dawn on Wednesday that if it was finalised it would be militarisation of the police.

They said the army was not a solution to every problem.

They said under the Police Order 2002, (article 2 sub-section 18), a police officer is subject to this order.

According to the article 7 (sub-section 3) the recruitment in the police other than ministerial and specialist cadres shall be in the rank of constable, ASI and ASP.

They said army officers could not be recruited on the pretext of improving ‘thana culture’ and police officials’ working.

“If the government is sincere to bring about reforms in the department, it must concentrate on quality of recruitment at grassroots level — constable to inspector — their training, offer them a good salary package and reduce their duty time to eight hours,” they said. —Staff Reporter
