Wedding meals: The Supreme Court on Friday reminded the general public as well as the administration of the ban it had imposed on serving meals in marriage ceremonies, writes our staff reporter.
The apex court also directed the government authorities concerned to check violations in this regard.
“See the audacity of the people as to how they are violating court orders so flagrantly,” Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry observed, while hearing a suo motu case registered on a complaint against Vehari District Naib Nazim Yousaf Kasiala, who served food at his marriage ceremony, which was attended by a large number of people.
“There is a need, it seems, to take strict action against violators without showing any leniency,” the CJ observed, adding that “we want strict implementation of court’s order in letter and spirit”.
A three-member bench, comprising the CJ, Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan and Justice Syed Jamshed Ali, ordered that the accused, Yousaf Kasiala, be produced before the court on Monday next, when the court would take up identical cases.
The order to produce to the accused came when his counsel, Malik Mohammad Qayyum, submitted a request for an adjournment since his client was abroad on honeymoon.
When the CJ asked District Coordinate Officer (DCO) Vehari Mohammad Ayub Qazi whether he had attended the ceremony hosted by district naib nazim, he replied in affirmative but claimed he only had a drink.
The court also ordered Punjab chief secretary and inspector general police to initiate disciplinary action against the DCO and district police officer concerned for their negligence because they were directly responsible for ensuring implementation of the ban on wedding meals in their respective areas.
Earlier, the court had directed DCOs in all 110 districts to ensure implementation of the law in their areas and submit challans against violators in civil courts.
