Horse-racing: Classy Cobbler should land day’s big race
LAHORE, April 15: Three-year-old bay colt, Cobbler, who ran a superb race on his previous outing, should oblige his connections by winning the Lake City Cup during the 33rd Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
The colt from the yard of Khawaja M. Arif had won in a fluent style on April 2 last in the lower division and now handicapped in class V division I to be run over 1300m.
A big field of 18 contenders will face the starter.
However, on present showing it looks a match between two colts, Cobbler and Herry Can View.
Naseerud Din Siddiqui owned, Herry Can View had too registered an easy success on Sunday last over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres.
He is the progeny of Dazzling Star out-of-Tango Cash.
But on bloodline Cobbler is far superior a progeny of Cisco Wells out-of-Pink Bouquet.
It is interesting to note that Cisco Wells was the progeny of proven U.S. based sire Sadler's Wells from the lineage of Northern Dancer.
With a good second and a victory under his belt and the connections basking in the glory of colt's quick form, Cobbler will be on the trot to make it two in-a-row.
This will be the fifth race of the day.
The supporting event the Hyderabad Plate class IV division I handicap race to be contested over 1200m has seven runners.
Of them three seems to be on chance.
They are: Trace Kim, Valentine and Sher-i-Gujrat. They should decide it and the rider would matter the most in this eighth and last race of the day.
On speed Valentine is good while on handicap trace Kim is placed very low to upset all calculations.
Two colts, Total Surprise and Alexander are the pick of eight contenders for the Hyderabad Plate class IV division II to be gone over 1200 metres.
Total Surprise is best on form and has an edge over Alexander, who is appearing on the course since his run in the Pakistan Derby on March 5 last.
Chestnut gelding Royal Gambler and the colt Royal Power are the prominent runners in the 14 strong field for the sixth race to be run over 1200 metres.
The former though placed on top in the handicap still looks better to edge out Royal Power.
Meanwhile jockey Shahid Rehman has been picked up to ride for the leading stable jointly owned by Messers Khawaja M. Arif and Shoaib Tariq.
It is yet not known whether he will be the first or the second choice among the riders engaged with this yard.
Until now jockey M. Hanif was the first choice with lesser fry M. Zeeshan and tricky Aamar Parvaiz, who is under suspension.
A competitive card of eight races have been drawn with first three races in particular handicapped tightly. The first race will be held at 1pm.
