One stroke lead for Lynn

BEIJING, April 15: Briton David Lynn will take a one-stroke lead into the final day of the China Open after high winds wreaked havoc during the third round on Saturday.

Benign conditions early in the day were replaced by 40 kph gusts in the afternoon with one twister blowing down a television tower and lifting at least one player's bag off the ground.

Overnight leader Lynn battled through a difficult round to record a par 72 and remain on nine-under-par, a shot in front of Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng and Jeev Milkha Singh of India.

Prayad shared the lead with Lynn for much of the afternoon until he found the water on a particularly mean 18th. The Thai carded a double bogey to drop to eight-under in a tie with Singh after a 72.

Singh witnessed the collapse of the tower from the next green but kept his composure to putt out for par before completing his round in a five-under 67.

One of those players was Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who described how he lay on the ground to let the swirling gust pass and how his playing partner's bag was lifted off the ground.

Australians Peter Fowler and Marcus Fraser finished tied for sixth with Briton Simon Wakefield on six-under.

Mainland China's last remaining player in the tournament, Li Chao, went out early and hit four bogeys and four birdies for a third successive round of par 72 to take a share of 38th.

Leading third scores:

207 -- David Lynn 68 67 72

208 -- Jeev Milkha Singh 72 69 67; Prayad Marksaeng 69 67 72

209 -- Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano 67 74 68; Paul Casey 71 68 70

210 -- Simon Wakefield 67 73 70; Peter Fowler 71 70 69; Marcus Fraser 70 71 69

211 -- Jarrod Lyle 68 71 72; Hendrik Buhrmann 72 68 71

FURYK LEADS

HILTON HEAD: Jim Furyk birdied two of the last four holes for a four-under-par 67 and a two-shot lead in the Heritage Classic second round at Hilton Head, South Carolina on Friday.

One off the pace overnight, the 35-year-old American mixed six birdies with consecutive bogeys from the eighth to finish on 11-under 131 at the Harbour Town Golf Links.

Australia's Aaron Baddeley, who holed out from 164 yards for an eagle-two at the last, also fired a 67 to share second place at nine under.
