Makina topples Victory Road to land Mile Championship

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, April 16: Four-year-old filly, Makina, returned with flying colours interrupting the winning run of fancied filly, Victory Road, to win the Mile Championship in the Summer Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

After chasing her all the way she finally succeeded in overtaking her opponent just 100 metres from the finishing post and sprinted to victory by two lengths. She won in an ordinary time of one minute 44 2/5 sec.

Finishing further three lengths behind was four-year-old bay colt, Naseeb-e-Arab while Fantasia settled for fourth place. Al Faris had a poor start as she was left at the gate.

Having won three races on trot, M. Shahrukh’s Victory Road ran below expectations. She seemed to be overworked and fading away at the closing stage.

However, despite her defeat, Victory Road is still in the lead of points table for ‘Horse of the Year’ 2006 award. She has amassed eight points from two races. The third and last race to be counted for the award is slated for April 30.

The day belonged to owner M. Shafiq and trainer S. Ehtisham as their combination clicked in three back-to-back races and the pair returned with a hat trick Their winners were Eswarah, Eager Saint and Sea Of Love in the fourth, fifth and sixth race.

Jockey Arshad also performed a splendid double as he piloted Eswarah and Eager Saint to victory while Latif rode Sea Of Love home.

As predicted in these columns, filly, Eswarah, justified her rating winning by seven lengths to make it three in a row.

Similarly, six-year-old mare, Eager Saint, obliged the punters when she met with fourth consecutive success.

The hidden talent of filly, Sea Of Love, was finally exposed when she won her maiden race.

Another horse that rose to the occasion for the first time was sibling Johnnei Walker with Salim Ahmed astride. However, he was fined Rs1,000 for dangerous riding.

Rider M. Nasir sprinted The Conqueror to victory in the concluding event to return with a brace of winners and share honours with contemporary Arshad. Earlier, he rode filly, Stormy Kiss, to victory by a wide margin of 11 lengths in the second race.

With the exception of those who finished on the board, all other riders were fined Rs.5,000 apiece for ‘unsatisfactory riding’.

Chestnut filly, Sea Gul, edged out favourite Desperado by half length to land the opener.
