LONDON, April 24: Left-arm spinner Ashley Giles will undergo groin surgery on Tuesday which will rule him out of England's three Tests and five One-day Internationals against Sri Lanka.
The 33-year-old Warwickshire player was one of their several absentees from the recent tour of India after failing to recover as quickly as anticipated from hip surgery.
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)’s chief medical officer Peter Gregory, said: “In light of the lack of progress with Ashley's rehabilitation from hip surgery, his surgeon recently recommended an opinion was sought from a hernia specialist.
“The view of this specialist, who was consulted last week, was that Ashley has developed a defect known as a Gilmore's Groin – which could account for the pain he suffers after he runs.
“Ashley will undergo surgical repair in the near future. It is hoped that this will enable him to return to cricket later this season.” That hip injury dated back to the start of last summer and Giles missed two
Tests against Bangladesh before the 2005 Ashes, and was also forced to leave the pre-Christmas tour of Pakistan.
Giles hopes to be fit in time for the Pakistan series this summer.
Giles, who has not bowled since undergoing hip surgery in December, missed England's recent drawn series in India through injury.
While he is set to be sidelined for whole of Sri Lanka series, England could also be without fast bowler Steve Harmison and captain Michael Vaughan for first Test which begins at Lord's on May 11.
Harmison rated himself doubtful for his country's first action of summer as he bids to overcome a shin injury.
Vaughan is in early stages of his recovery from knee injury which forced him to return home from India ahead of opening Test.—AFP
