Munir lifts title for 2nd time

ISLAMABAD, April 24: Munir Haider Malik won the President of Pakistan Cup Championship for the second time on Monday at the Rawalpindi Golf Club.

Munir said he was delighted to have won the crown after carding three under par 69 net for a three-day aggregate of 211 in the amateur net category.

The victorious golfer who last claimed the title in 2001 had a round of two under par 70 on the opening day of the championship and followed that up with a par on the second day that included an eagle on the par 4 17th hole.

In landing the title, Munir toppled overnight leader Yasir Khokhar, who had led by a stroke going into the final day.

Yasir finished with a total of 214 to be the runner-up in the championship while Tariq Saleem came third with a three-day score of 215.

The net category of this prestigious event, which was graced by President Gen Pervez Musharraf, involved golfers having a handicap of 12 and below.

In men's gross competition, Rawalpindi's Waqas Ahmed claimed the top honours totalling 212 finishing 10 strokes ahead of Islamabad's Taimur Hassan who scored 222.

The third place went to Tariq Mahmood (229) of the Islamabad Golf Club.

Ms Durdana Soomoro was the victor in the 36 holes ladies net event carding 149. She was followed by Ms Fouzia Ali Khan (150) in second place with Mehwish Javed (155) taking third spot.

The gross honours were bagged by Ms Tahira Nazir who had a total of 167, eight strokes ahead of second placed Ms Faakeha Ahmereen (175).

Ms Shahzadi Gulfam was third with 188.

Abdul Ghafoor Raja was winner of the seniors net category with a score of 136 while Rashid (138) was the runner-up and Javed Iqbal (142) had to be content with third place.

The gross prize was picked up by M. Ashraf (163) with Tariq Kalim finishing two strokes adrift at 165 and Safi (166) grabbing third slot.
