Villagers protest against oil company

By Our Correspondent

DADU, April 27: Two demonstrations were held by local people against the management of the Zamzama gas plant on Thursday in protest against non-payment of compensation for land and non-recruitment of locals.

The residents of village Jiando Gadhi, taluka Johi, staged a demonstration in front of the main gate of the plant run by BHP Billiton.

They were demanding payment of compensation for land on which a road was built by the company from Chhandan bridge to the gas plant.

DSP Nazeer Ahmed Samejo and security in-charge of the gas plant, Major Shuja Chandio, met the villagers and assured them that compensation would be paid after verification of documents.

The villagers ended their protest after the assurance.

The other demonstration was held by people from Dodo Panhwar and Allah Bachayo Panhwar and activists of Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party at the southern gate of the plant. They blocked the road.

A spokesman for BHP Billiton told this correspondent that the company pursued the policy of providing 100 per cent jobs to local people.

About land compensation to the growers of village Jiando Gadhi, the spokesman said that full compensation would be paid after the claimants completed their documents.
