Man held with 52 passports

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, April 28: The Federal Investigation Agency has arrested a man from the Nothia Jaded locality and seized 52 passports and documents related to Transfer of Residence (TR) from him, official sources said here on Friday.

The FIA was investigating whether the accused, Bisharat Ali, was involved in human trafficking or illegal import of vehicles from Dubai, sub-inspector Zahid Dawar told Dawn.

Zahid Dawar, who headed the FIA crime circle team which raided the H.A. Pharmacy shop in Nothia Jaded on Thursday evening, said the seized Pakistani passports were original.

Official sources said some people were taking advantage of a government decision to allow overseas Pakistanis to get a duty-free car after his change of residence from a foreign country to Pakistan. Only those could avail the facility who had completed their job of at least two years in a foreign country, they maintained.

The documents seized from Bisharat indicated that he had purchased the passports from people who had completed their services in foreign countries, said Mr Dawar.

Some documents showed that a few customs officials were also involved in the illegal business of car imports from Dubai, the FIA official said. He added that the FIA would investigate the case and arrest the customs officials who were found guilty.

The FIA has obtained a one-day physical remand of the accused and will produce him in a local court on Saturday to appeal for extending his remand.

ASI HELD: An assistant sub-inspector posted at the Inqilab checkpost in the Badhber locality on the Kohat Road was arrested on the charge of harassing a first year student of a local college, police officials said.

The student lodged a complaint with city police chief Habibur Rehman on Friday against ASI Abdur Rehman. He alleged that the ASI wanted to sexually assault him.

The ASI was also suspended and departmental and criminal investigations against him have been initiated against him.

ARRESTED: The city police on Friday claimed to have arrested three alleged car-lifters and seized a stolen car from them.

The car had been stolen from outside a mosque in the Daudzai area on April 13.

Police first arrested Mehraban Shah of the Takhatabad village and recovered the stolen car, and on his information, arrested his accomplices, Imran of the Dhaki Nalbandin locality and Israr of Bakhshu Pul.

BLAST: A group of people hurled a fire-cracker on the Gulbahar police station on Friday afternoon, breaking windowpanes of the police station.

The bomb disposal squad rushed to the site but did not find any object used in the blast. Later, the squad declared that it was fire cracker.
