Army to represent in AFC Cup
LAHORE, April 28: Pakistan Army, as national champions, will represent the country in the second edition of the AFC President Football Cup to be held at Kuching, Sarawak an Island of Borneo in Malaysia from May 10 to 21.
Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has shifted the eight-team event to Malaysia from Cambodia. Pakistan was also the candidate for the event but as the Pakistan Football Federation wanted to organise it in Lahore, the Asian body did not allow it because of non-availability of floodlights.
The tournament will kick off on May 10 and the new date for the final is May 21.
The matches will be held at the Sarawak and Negeri Stadiums.
Eight teams have been split into two groups of four each for the 12 league encounters which runs through May 10 to 15.
Army, national champion of Pakistan in 1993, 1995 and 2005, are placed in Group 'A' and they will meet Tatung (Chinese Taipei) on the inaugural day.
According to draws, the tough Group-B, famous as 'Group of Death', has last year's runners-up Dordoi-Dynamo of Kyrgyzstan, Tajik champions FC Vakhsh, Manang Marshyangdi of Nepal and Sri Lanka's Ratnam Sports Club.
The top-two teams of each group will make the last four. The semifinals will be played on May 17 and 18.
Tajikistan blanked Dordoi-Dynamo of Kyrgyzstan 3-0 in the final at Kathmandu's Dasharath Stadium on May 14, 2005. Other participants were Three Star Club (Nepal), Transport United (Bhutan), Taiwan Power Company (Chinese Taipei), Blue Star Sports Club (Sri Lanka), WAPDA (Pakistan) and Hello United (Cambodia).
