KARACHI, May 5: Students and activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba on Friday held protest demonstrations outside major mosques after Friday prayers against the government's failure to arrest killers of their colleague, Akmal Sherazi, who was killed by terrorists at a local college a few weeks back.

They also protested against continued violence against students and teachers at educational institutes by terrorists and the government's failure in taking punitive and preventive action in stopping them.

Protest demonstrations were held outside mosques in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, F B Area, Abul Hasan Asfahani Road, Saddar, Tariq Road, Bahadurabad and mosques inside various educational institutes.

The protesting students were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against the provincial government, the governor, home minister and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and demanded the removal certain government functionaries and the arrest of terrorists.

They also chanted slogans against the MQM, the APMSO, police and the city and provincial administrations and accused them of patronizing and sheltering terrorists.

Speaking to protestors at various places, the IJT’s office-bearers and leaders said that after killing and torturing students at educational institutes, armed terrorists were now harassing the families of IJT workers under police cover and subjecting them to torture at police stations.

They charged that police vans and mobiles were being used by the terrorists to raid the residences of IJT workers and nobody in the city was ready to listen to their complaints and miseries, as law enforcers were openly supporting and siding with the terrorists.

The IJT office bearers also criticized the Sindh government, especially the home minister and governor for their “hypocritic” statements and claims and alleged that they were giving misleading statements about restoring peace in colleges.

They warned that if the killers of Akmal Sherazi were not arrested, they would be compelled to take harsh steps and initiate prolonged protests.—PPI
