National Srs tennis from today

By A Sports Correspondent

KARACHI, May 5: The second National Seniors tennis championship gets into action at the Karachi Gymkhana on Saturday with stars of yesteryears showing glimpses of their past.

Officially launched last year the competition is being held under the aegis of Pakistan Seniors Tennis Association.

The competition will continue till May 11 and will be contested in six categories namely 35 plus singles and doubles, 45 plus singles and doubles, 55 plus doubles and mixed doubles. According to draws, Syed Qutub Ahmed and Khawaja Masroor have been top seeded in 35 and 45 singles.

Surprisingly, no outstation player has entered in the event as it offers no financial rewards under the ITF rules.

Meanwhile, Shabbir Gul of Hyderabad has been top ranked in 35 plus in the latest national ranking of seniors released by the PTF. He has amassed 15 points. He is followed by Shahid Aziz and Syed Qutub who are tied joint second with 10 points apiece.

Khawaja Masroor and Shahid Hussain were joint first with 21 points in the 45 plus category. Zahid Hussain is at second position with 15 points.

Saturday’s fixtures: At 6.00pm: 35 singles, 45 singles (first round).
