KOHAT, May 24: Kohat University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor Zabita Khan Shinwari has said that the university has decided to increase the quota of girl students from next year.

He said that girls’ enrolment which was only seven per cent last year and 17 per cent this year would be raised to 30 to 40 per cent next year, a press release issued on Wednesday said.

Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of inter-colleges sports events, he said that the literacy rate among the women in the region was negligible and that was why they were lagging behind in every field.

He said that any social change was impossible without educating women and bringing them at par with the male population.

Air Commander Hafizullah, Base Commander, Kohat Air Base, also spoke on the occasion and distributed prizes among the winning teams.

CLERKS DEMAND: The Kohat chapter of the All-Pakistan Clerks Association observed a pen-down strike on Wednesday, demanding an increase in salary and other benefits.

There was a partial strike in the Tehsil Municipal Administration and the staff of district courts did not heed the strike call.

Speaking on the occasion, Kohat APCA president Pir Farooq Shah criticised policies of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and said he had failed to resolve problems of the poor.

He said the gap between the poor and the rich had widened during Mr Aziz’s tenure and now, 50 per cent people were living below the poverty line in the country and 80 per cent could hardly earn Rs120 a day. On the other hand, he said, prices of essential commodities had increased by more than 100 per cent.

He demanded that the government should announce relief for the poor in the coming budget because it had become impossible for them to earn two-time bread, pay utility bills, health bills and educate their children.

The gathering unanimously adopted a resolution demanding 50 per cent increase in salaries, house rent, full health cover for their families and removal of ban on increments.

Mr Shah said a superintendent should be retired in grade 17 and junior clerks be given grade 9 as had been done in the case of physical training instructors and head constables in the police department.
