LARKANA, May 24: The district council in a resolution adopted unanimously on Wednesday demanded that the Sindh government should provide sufficient quantity of gunny bags to wheat growers.
Tabling the motion, Oshaque Ali Bossan alleged that the food department at the cost of growers’ loss was providing gunny bags to influential people, landlords and the rich.
He alleged that some officials concerned were taking Rs20 per bag as bribe. They had also reduced the quota of 30,000 gunny bags for Ratodero to only 16,000, he added.
He called for initiating an action against the defaulters and demanded assurance for provision of bags in the required quantity to growers.
Khair Mohammed Shaikh, Nizakat Agani and others endorsed the move and called for early availability of gunny bags
Convener Munawar Ali Abro, presiding over the session, said the Sindh food department should make appropriate arrangements to overcome the shortage and ensuring just distribution of gunny bags.
The council continued its proceedings in the absence of the Khushhal Pakistan Panel members. They remained out of the hall on the pretext that the convener had lost his credibility and confidence of the council.
Only 22 Awam Dost Penal and Sindh National Front-backed members were present at the session when different items were tabled, discussed and passed without any hindrance.
However, 53 members had signed the roll-call register, only 22 took part in the proceedings.
Badar Abbasi, an independent member, drew the convener’s attention towards the ‘quorum’ and said that doing business amid that situation was illegal and against the spirit of the Sindh Local Government Ordinance.
