Wapda, CAA in men’s final

ISLAMABAD, May 24: Wapda are to play CAA in Thursday's men’s final of the second National team squash championship after scoring almost identical semifinal victories at the Mushaf Squash Complex on Wednesday.

Yasir Butt and Farhan Mahboob picked up contrasting wins against their opponents from Navy that sent Wapda through with a 2-0 scoreline while Majid Khan and Basit Ashfaq were the architects of CAA's victory over Army.

In the first semifinal, Yasir had it easy against Khayal Mohammad and outplayed him 9-3, 9-2, 9-1 while Farhan was made to sweat for a 9-3, 7-9, 9-7, 9-7 win against Farrukh Zaman after being on court for 67 minutes.

Majid Khan put CAA on the way with a 9-1, 10-9, 10-9 victory over Shah Nawaz.

Basit Ashfaq, despite being extended by Khalid Atlas, managed to wrap it all up for his side winning 7-9, 9-3, 9-2, 9-2.

On the women's side Wapda and Army qualified for the final which like men's decider will also be contested on Thursday.

Men's semifinals: Wapda bt Navy 2-0 (Yasir Butt bt Khayal Mohammad 9-3, 9-2, 9-1; Farhan Mahboob bt Farrukh Zaman 9-3, 7-9, 9-7, 9-7).

CAA bt Army 2-0 (Majid Khan bt Shah Nawaz 9-1, 10-9, 10-9; Basit Ashfaq bt Khalid Atlas 7-9, 9-3, 9-2, 9-2).

Playoffs: Punjab bt Sindh 2-1 (Shoaib Hassan bt Sheroze Khan 9-1, 3-9, 9-6, 9-3; M. Naveed lost to Kashif Khan 6-9, 9-5, 2-9, 6-9; Sheikh Saqib bt Asif Khan 1-9, 10-8, 9-0, 5-9, 9-2).

PAF bt NWFP (Safeerullah Khan bt Riaz Hussain 9-4, 9-0, 9-5; Naveed Atlas bt Alamzeb 9-6, 9-0, 9-0).

Women's pool matches: Wapda bt Army 3-0 (Maria Toor bt Sarah Awan 9-1, 9-4, 9-3; Muqaddas Ashraf bt Misbah Rani 9-2, 9-1, 7-9, 9-3; Aliya Sarfraz bt Zoya Khalid 9-7, 5-9, 3-9, 9-7, 9-0).

Punjab bt Sindh 2-1 (Zeba Pervez bt Irum Jahan 9-5, 7-9, 9-4, 9-6; Maliha Shahid bt Habiba Khan 9-6, 9-7, 8-10, 9-10, 9-4; Roshna Mahboob lost to Bushra Haider 1-9, 4-9, 5-9).

Thursday's fixtures: Men's final: Wapda v CAA at 3.00pm; women's final: Wapda v Punjab at 1.00pm.
