SAHIWAL, June 8: Jurisdiction row between two police stations has been delaying registration of a power wire-theft case for about two years while a large area remains without electricity during the period.

Reports said some unidentified people had snapped the overhead electricity wire near Mirdad Musafi railway station on April 13, 2004, and took it away on a truck. As a result of the theft, the railway station and its adjoining area plunged into darkness. The value of the stolen wire at that time was Rs51,000, which later swelled up to Rs0.25 million.

Wapda’s Civil Lines circle sub-divisional officer in his written complaint asked Harappa police station SHO to register the case. The SHO refused to entertain the complaint on the pretext that the theft was committed outside Harappa police jurisdiction and forwarded the application to Farid Town police station for ‘necessary action’. The Farid Town SHO also refused to register the case on similar ground, sending the application back to its origin.

Since then, Mirdad Musafi railway station and it adjoining area is without electricity.

The affected residents have strongly protested over the apathy of two government departments which are also notorious for slackness and lack of response, demanding restoration of electricity and registration of theft case.

IMPERSONATOR HELD: Farid Town police arrested a man impersonating an army officer on Wednesday.

The police said the accused, clad in fake army uniform introduced himself as an army officer and approached SHO Rao Shafqat to get released an arrested person.

He tried to pressurise the SHO who became suspicious of his conduct and after a few queries came to know that the man was an impersonator. A case has been registered against the accused.

ELECTED: The election of the Hydro Electric Central Labour Union of Sahiwal Zone held here on Thursday.

Reports said Chaudhry Zafar Mahmood was elected chairman, Mushtaq Ahmad Jat vice-chairman, Rao Anees Ayub general secretary and Khalid Javed was elected joint secretary.

In the Sahiwal division elections, Shafiqur Rehman was elected chairman, Tariq Javed vice-chairman and Khurram Saleem was elected general secretary.

SENTENCED: A local court has awarded aggregate 38 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 105,000 each to three accused involved in a double murder case.

The court also awarded 13 years imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5,000 each to their three co-accused.
