LAHORE, June 10: Union council level elections of the ruling PML will be held in the provincial capital on Sunday (today), after which arrangements will be made for city units’ polls on June 18 and 19.

The UC level elections will be held in all nine towns. However, in the cantonment area the exercise will be completed on Friday.

In other cities, the UC level elections will be completed by June 20, according to the convenience of the party leaders.

Arrangements for the polls in Lahore were explained at a meeting at the Muslim League House on Saturday.

Chief Election Commissioner for Punjab Mian Abdus Sattar, district nazim Amer Mehmood, Lahore president Mian Munir, provincial ministers Qudsia Lodhi, Nasim Lodhi, Aleem Khan and Mian Aslam Iqbal, chief minister’s son Moonis Elahi, party leaders Khwaja Tahir Zia, Akhtar Rasool, Chaudhry Muhammad Siddique and Ramzan Bhatty participated.

Haji Muhammad Hanif, who will supervise the electoral process in the provincial metropolis, was also there.

Mian Amer said efforts were being made to choose the office-bearers with a consensus. However, where a contest became unavoidable, the candidate supported by majority of the voters would be declared winner.

He explained that the level of support could be established even through show of hands.

The electoral process will start at 10am and continue till 4pm. However, where necessary, the time could be extended even to 7pm.

Mian Amer said the electoral process would strengthen the party at the grassroots level. Now, he said the situation would be different from the 2002 general election when the PML had its candidates in the field but organisational structure at these tiers was not there.

The party, he said, had 4,000 primary units in Lahore.

Mian Abdus Sattar said the electoral process would be absolutely transparent and nobody would be able to raise any objection.
