Karzai advised restraint

MULTAN, July 7: US Ambassador Ryan C Crocker has asked Afghan President Hamid Karzai not to give statements against US allies.

Talking to journalists here on Friday, Crocker has said that Pakistan role in war on terror was commendable and a number of Pakistan’s soldiers had scarified their lives, specially on the Afghan border.

He said that Pakistan, Afghanistan and United States were important allies in war on terror and no one had any doubt about Pakistan’s sincerity in war on terror.

About democracy in Pakistan, the ambassador said that US was striving for promotion of democracy all around the world, including Pakistan. According to him, Pakistanis would have to work for sustainable democracy themselves.

Speaking at ceremony earlier, Crocker said that the success of the US-funded ACCESS English pilot project in Lahore had encouraged them to expand this programme to Multan where it would reach around 300 high school students, giving them the English language skills so necessary to compete for college admissions and later on in the job market.

He said that learning English through a programme associated with the US Consulate in Lahore would also provide these students with a new window on American values and culture that would in turn enhance trust and understanding between two nations.—Online
