KARACHI: 18 vehicles taken away in city

KARACHI, July 20: As many as 61 people were deprived of their cars, motorbikes or cellphones in various areas here on Thursday.

Police said 18 vehicles — six cars and 12 motorbikes — were either snatched or stolen. Two cars were snatched at gunpoint and four others stolen. Four motorcycles were snatched at gunpoint and eight others stolen.

Police claimed to have recovered six stolen cars and 14 motorbikes in different areas and they would soon be handed over to their owners.

Besides, 29 people were held at gunpoint in various localities by the bandits. These people were robbed of their cellphones, cash and belongings. Fourteen other people reported to the police that their mobile phones were stolen.

FIRE: A major fire broke out in a multi-storey building on I.I. Chundrigar Road early Thursday morning.

Fire Brigade officials said the fire erupted at the eighth floor of the building. At least seven fire tenders were sent to put out the fire.

The fire fighters took at least four hours to extinguish the fire and five firemen fainted during the process. However, no casualty or injury was reported.

ACCIDENT: A man died and a friend of his received injuries when an unknown vehicle hit their motorbike on the Mai Kolachi Bypass on Thursday.

Police said two men, Fayyaz, 20, and Rafique, 24, were on their motorbike when an unknown vehicle hit them. Both the riders suffered injuries. They were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where Fayyaz was pronounced dead on arrival.
