Rivers in medium to high floods

ISLAMABAD, Aug 4: Rivers in many parts of the country were flowing in medium to high flood because of ongoing rains and officials feared that continuous rainfall might soon convert “medium flood into high flood”.

Officials of the Federal Flood Commission said that total inflows at rim stations increased to 844,390 cusecs at 6pm on Friday, rising from 608,619 cusecs in the morning, a rise of 235,771 cusecs in less than 12 hours.

River Indus at Chashma and Taunsa barrage was currently flowing in medium flood level while waters in River Chenab at Marala had moved from medium to high flood level. Similarly, River Kabul was flowing in high flood situation at Nowshera with a flow of 114,100 cusecs.

Water flow level at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Guddu, Khanki and Warsak was recorded to be at ‘low flood’.

Meanwhile, water flow at Sukkur and Kotri barrages, Kohala, Mangla, Rasul, Punjnad and Sulemanki was rising but were currently flowing within normal flow condition.

They said relevant authorities like civil defence, military, irrigation and Wapda had been put on alert to face any eventuality and all necessary precautions have been taken in hand in this regard

Officials said that total inflows in dams stood at 844,390 cusecs on Friday evening compared with outflows of 675,170 cusecs, meaning that about 170,000 cusecs were being stored in reservoirs.

Water levels in Tarbela and Mangla had increased to 1,529.4 feet and 1,198 feet, respectively, and the operations of dams have already been handed over to Wapda to deal with outflows keeping in mind inflows and safety aspects of dams.
