KARACHI, Aug 23: Deputy Election Commissioner Tanveer Zaki on Wednesday assured the Pakistan People’s Party leaders that the government would conduct house census, as well as enrolment of voters, in the areas where this had not been done yet.

He was addressing a joint meeting of the representatives of Pakistan People’s Party, Karachi Division, and the Provincial Election Commission at the office of Nafees Siddiqui, General Secretary of the PPP, Sindh, to discus the complaints and irregularities in the preparation of new voter lists.

On the occasion, district presidents of PPP complained that names of opposition supporters were not being enrolled as the election commission staff concerned was working under the supervision of the activists of ruling parties. They said that despite passage of scheduled time, a large number of houses in various areas could not be covered in the house census.

They said that there were many mistakes in the forms as the EC staff filling up the prescribed forms appeared not properly trained and not able to help illiterate people fill them up. They said that it was also observed that the staff was not giving any receipt pertaining to the entries in the lists.

The meeting was told that staff could not reach each and every house in their assigned areas as they were supposed to visit more than 400 houses in urban areas and over 1,000 in the rural areas.

It was decided to hold another meeting after 15 days to review the situation.

Nafees Siddiqui, Rashid Rabbani, Waqar Mehdi, Rafiq Engineer, Saeed Ghani, and other PPP leaders were present at the meeting where those from the election commission were District Election Commissioners M. A. Saleem (Central), Imran Ahmed (South), S Nasir Abbas (West), Shaikh Mohammad Yaqoob (Malir) and Syed Nadeem Haider (Central).
