PESHAWAR, Aug 23: Inordinate delay in holding interview for a post of assistant professor in the cardiology ward of the Khyber Teaching Hospital has been causing unrest among candidates.
Sources at the KTH said that the post had been lying vacant for three years. Two weeks ago the post was advertised in newspapers and scrutiny of the applications was completed but so far the applicants had not been called for interviews.
The post was advertised also in the past, but a doctor, fearing appointment of a favourite in violation of rules, obtained a stay order from a local court due to which interviews could not be held. After vacation of stay order, however, the post was re-advertised and this time about six specialist cardiologists have moved applications.
Sources said that the patients visiting the hospital with cardiac problem suffer a lot in absence of senior doctors at the ward and this situation has been prevailing for last several years. One of the two senior registrars is on long leave while the other post is vacant.
They said that two senior registrars with MCPS degrees in cardiology had been working at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) whereas the KTH, which is the second biggest hospital of the province, lacked specialist cardiologists.
According to the prescribed rules of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), the candidates with qualification, such as FCPS, MD and MS in cardiology were required to be appointed against the post of assistant professor. However, sources at the hospital revealed that the hospital administration was trying its level best to pave the way for the appointment of candidate who doesn’t fulfil the desired criteria.
Sources revealed that the hospital had advertised posts of junior registrars in cardiology, gynaecology and paediatric departments along with the post of assistant professor cardiology, but all the other posts had been filled while the one for the assistant professor was yet to be filled. They said that some influential senior doctors were trying to get favourites appointed on the post.
Director-general health services, Dr Jalilur Rehman, said that the teaching hospital didn’t fall in purview of the directorate of health.
