KARACHI, Aug 26: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad on Saturday reiterated the combined opposition’s resolve to continue its struggle against President Gen Pervez Musharraf-led dispensation and put an end to military’s frequent intervention in the political process.

He was addressing a news conference here ahead of the Sunday’s public rally planned

by the MMA at the Nishtar Park.

Mr Ahmad claimed that the no-confidence motion against the prime minister was in fact a charge-sheet against what he called ‘a corrupt dispensation’ which, led by President Musharraf, had subverted the Constitution, deviated the country from its ideological moorings and enslaved the people to please foreign masters.

He said that both the ARD and MMA along with the ANP, PONM and Tehrik-i-Insaf were united on the one point agenda to banish military-led dispensation to restore supremacy of the constitution and parliament and individual’s liberty and dignity.

He was of the view that the no-confidence move was a charge-sheet against the regime for its alleged corruption and subversion of the Constitution and represent people’s revolve that military should have no political role.

He criticised government’s measures against khateebs for expressing their views on the controversial amendments in Hudood law and alleged that over 300 khateebs were detained on Friday.

He deplored the action and said that it was clear manifestation of the hollow claims of the government about love for Islam and Islamic values.

He alleged that khateeb’s were subjected to torture and asked the clergy to remain united and steadfast against such moves.

He slammed the government for its actions in the tribal areas and Balochistan owing to which the country was being destabilized.

Referring to the government’s ban on distributing leaflets outside mosques, the MMA chief called it a violation of the right of expression and declared that he himself would violate the restriction.

He brushed aside government’s criticism of the MMA during the National Assembly session when the amendment bill was being presented and said the government was making baseless allegations and alleged that the bill was not intended to protect women and their rights.

He also slammed the government for not arresting anyone in connection with the Nishtar Park tragedy and said the hue and cry made by some political elements was an attempt to cover up their involvement and to divert attention from the real issues.
