KARACHI: Smooth supply of edibles in Ramazan ordered

KARACHI, Sept 13: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad on Wednesday stressed on effective measures to ensure availability of essential goods at reasonable prices across the province during the holy month of Ramazan.

Chairing a high-level meeting at the Governor’s House, he directed the officials concerned to take all steps before the advent of the holy month towards the implementation of these measures.

The meeting also reviewed the progress made by the Consumer Rights Council.

City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, Principal Secretary Mohammad Salim Khan, Agriculture Secretary Muhkamuddin Qadri, Prosecution Secretary Ishaq Lashari, Special Secretary Javed Hanif and DCO Karachi Fazlur Rehman were among those who were present at the meeting.

Head of the Consumer Rights Council Sharfuddin Memon apprised the governor of projects undertaken by the committee and the progress thereof.

Dr Ibad directed the city government to provide charge-free space in different parts of the city to cultivators so that they could sell fruits and vegetables directly to consumers. “This will reduce the cost of their business, hence making it possible for them to offer low rates of fruits and vegetables to consumers,” he explained.

The governor emphasised on taking immediate and coordinated steps aimed at creating awareness in consumers, besides containing hoarding and sale of substandard products during Ramazan.

The governor also issued directives for gearing up efforts towards the early establishment of two more Sabzi Mandis, one on the National Highway and the other on the RCD Highway.

He called for quick completion of the work on setting up of ‘dairy villages’ in the suburbs of Karachi, as well as in Hyderabad, Thatta and Badin so that meat and dairy products could be made available to consumers at reasonable prices.

The meeting decided to take steps for bringing the subject of establishing market committees under the Sindh Local Government Ordinance, and ensuring that these committees assumed a role of a guarantor of the rights of both cultivators and consumers.

It was also decided to establish the central office of the Consumer Rights Council next to the CDGK offices.

WATER TAX: Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has taken strong exception to the issuance of notices to the people of Hyderabad for recovery of water charges which had invited public reaction.

He directed WASA to immediately withdraw the notices as the people of Hyderabad were already undergoing the agony resulting from the torrential rains and flooding.

The governor also directed the nazim and DCO of Hyderabad to take action against those who had resorted to playing with the sentiments of the people already living in miserable conditions these days.

He said the people of Hyderabad deserved to be provided maximum relief on a top priority basis.—APP
