SANGHAR, Sept 13: More than 800,000 people have been displaced and 90 per cent crops damaged by the recent rains in the Sanghar district. Over 440 millimetres rain has been recorded over the last two months.

Thousands of cattle, sheep and goats have died in the rain due to starvation and diseases.

This was stated by District Nazim Haji Khuda Bux Rajar here on Wednesday in the district council session. He said damage in terms of crops and property is bigger than the October 2005 earthquake of Kashmir and the NWFP.

He said the government so far has provided Rs15 million for relief work which is a meagre amount for such a huge disaster.

The nazim informed council members that he has talked to the President and the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister will be visiting Sanghar on Saturday or Sunday.

District council members Murad Ali Nizamani, Umer Khan Khattak, Tariq Faqir Khaskheli, Ismail Dars and others spoke on the occasion.

They demanded that a relief package in terms of agricultural loans, exemption in revenue dues, electricity bills of tube-wells and also provide seed and fertiliser to farmers.
