Mohali, Oct 5: The ICC Champions Trophy kicks off here on Saturday, but Indian Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium is not in good shape to host the event. At least, it seems so on the face of it.

On entering the main PCA stadium pavilion side, all one gets to see is scores of labourers and tonnes of construction material and debris all around. Not quite a sight that one would expect for a premier event like Champions Trophy - touted to be a mini cricket World Cup.

Construction activity is in full swing at stadium and not likely to get over even after Champions Trophy ends at Mumbai Nov 5. But that will hardly affect schedule of five matches to be played here, including a semi-final on Nov 1.

“The facilities and ground are absolutely ready. There is no cause for concern. The construction work outside stadium building will have no affect on matches,” PCA curator Daljit Singh said.

Even International Cricket Council (ICC) officials are not bothered about stadium not being “technically” complete before the tournament.

“We have no problems. The core areas inside - ground, players dressing rooms, arrangements for match, ICC officials, media facilities, spectator stands — all seem to be in order. There is nothing to worry,” said Samiul Hasan, communications manager for ICC & media coordinator for Champions Trophy. — Agencies
