KARACHI, Oct 11: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has directed that Shah Faisal Town should be supplied approved quota of water and tenders be invited for purchase of four 200 KV generators for four standby pumping stations to ensure continuous water supply.

Addressing a joint meeting of UC nazims and water board officials at Shah Faisal Town on Tuesday night, Mustafa Kamal said that revolutionary steps had been taken to overcome water shortage in Shah Faisal and the problem would be solved soon.

He pointed out that pumps at four pumping stations were installed in 1971 and since then no attention was paid.

The present government purchased six new pumps at a cost of Rs9.6 million after 35 years and their installation at pumping stations had been started, he added.

He called for a long-term planning to meet water requirement of Shah Faisal Town for the next 50 years and a short-term plan for immediate solution as well besides PC-1 for main sewerage line.

Soon after its approval, the nazim said that work would be started.

He said that payment of salaries to sweepers should be made on the basis of attendance certificate by UC nazims while absenting and ghost staff be immediately terminated and new appointments be made.

He directed that if performance of solid waste contractor was not found satisfactory, it should be annulled and new ones should be provided opportunity.

He said that solid waste contractor would have to bring his vehicles besides town vehicles. He said that the objective of privatising the system was that contractors should bring more vehicles and staff and only then proper sanitary conditions could be created.

In a briefing on development activities, the nazim was informed that town has carried out water and sewerage works worth Rs14 million which included change of valves, repair of leakages and change of lines.

He was told that new lines were laid and large scale road carpeting had been carried out.
