KARACHI, Oct 11: The PTCL Telecom Foundation Wages Action Committee staged a protest outside the Karachi Press Club on Wednesday against the sacking of 1900 workers, including 210 daily wagers of Karachi.

The protestors, both men and women, were chanting slogans against the PTCL administration.

The president of the action committee Shahjehan Sheikh announced to launch a protest drive against retrenchment.

He demanded of the Telecom Foundation to withdraw orders of sacking workers and instead regularize their services.

He warned that if the administration failed to respond, a protest demo would be staged outside the GM Office on Friday.

The CBA Employees Union also announced their full cooperation to the action committee.

PTCL CLAIM: A PTCL spokesman on Wednesday categorically denied that the company had terminated the services of over 1900 employees.

Describing the factual position, the spokesman said the company some time ago, had forged an agreement with the Telecom foundation, for hiring services of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled manpower.

Such workers were still on Telecom Foundation's strength and getting salary from there and, therefore, were in no way PTCL employees, as wrongly reported by certain newspapers.

Now, when PTCL does not need any workforce from outside, it decided to terminate its contract with the Telecom Foundation, revoking the clause 12.6 of the contract between PTCL and Telecom Foundation.

The PTCL management had made it clear after taking charge of the company affairs that it would remain committed to what it had promised and would do everything to safeguard genuine interest of employees.—PPI/APP
