PESHAWAR, Nov 20: The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child has demanded that the government should fulfil the international commitments concerning protection of children’s rights and help end the menace of child labour.

Addressing a press conference held at the press club in connection with the Universal Child Day on Monday, the society’s regional manager, Jahanzeb Khan, urged the government to enforce the existing laws for child rights.

He also demanded that the government should declare primary and secondary level education compulsory for every child.

He said poverty alleviation could help end the menace of child labour.

He said of the country’s 40 million children, 8 to 10 million were involved in various kinds of labour and was the outcome of the laws being not enforced.

Mr Khan also asked for legislation in line with UN Conventions on child labour, to which Pakistan was a signatory.
