Accident stirs protest in Sukkur

SUKKUR, Jan 16: Hundreds of residents of Local Board area demonstrated and later staged a sit-in at Minara road, in the jurisdiction of C-section police station, Sukkur, on Tuesday evening, following an accident in which a motorcyclist of the area was hit by a rashly driven wagon.

According to reports, Qaiser son of Iftikhar Qureshi 25, resident of Local Board area was going towards his home. When he reached near Makki Mosque at Minara road, a speedy passenger wagon coming from the opposite direction hit him while trying to overtake another wagon. As a result, he received serious injuries and was shifted to civil hospital, Sukkur.

According to a doctor of the civil hospital, Sukkur, the injured was referred to a Larkana hospital due to severe injuries he received on head.

After the accident, hundreds of the enraged residents staged a protest demonstration and blocked the main road for three hours and burnt tyres, suspending vehicular traffic. The protesters were shouting slogans against the police, who according to them, had failed to control the traffic, especially the wagons plying between Rohri and Sukkur.

Later, the TPO City, Sarwar Bhayo, along with a police party rushed to the scene and held talks with the protesters and asked them to disperse, but the protesters refused till the arrest of the wagon driver.

The protesters dispersed only after the arrest of the wagon driver Gul Mohammad.
