KASUR, Feb 8: A blasphemy accused, Martha Bibi, will now appear in the district and sessions court here on Feb 13 instead of a lower court at Chunnian.

The concession was granted on Thursday after the district and session judge accepted a police request to the effect as they apprehended that her transportation to a magistrate’s court in Chunnian could create law and order situation given the nature of accusations against the woman.

Chunnian police had arrested Martha on Jan 22 following blasphemy accusations against her. She was sent to judicial lockup the same day.

Duty magistrate, Chunnian, had ordered to produce the accused in the court.

Muhammad Dilbur of Kot Nank Singh village had submitted an application to Changa Manga SHO on Jan 22, 2007, alleging that Martha Bibi, a Christian woman, had committed blasphemy.

Dilbur had alleged that Martha came to an under-construction village mosque to collect wooden planks, she had rented out for construction work, and the rent on the same, but indulged in a brawl with a woman of the same village. While exchanging hot words with her, Martha uttered blasphemous remarks against the Holy Prophet (PBUH), he alleged in the application.

Kasur police on Feb 1 submitted to the district court that given the nature of charges against the accused it was feared that her transportation to the lower court in Chunnian might create law and order situation. It was, therefore, requested that the trial be conducted at the district headquarters to avoid any untoward situation.

The judge, granting the request, issued orders to produce the accused in the district and sessions court on Feb 13.
