KARACHI, March 2: Former England batsman Chris Broad, who has had a few ‘tiffs’ with Inzamam-ul-Haq’s side as the elite panel match referee, was nominated on Friday to supervise all three of Pakistan’s Group ‘D’ matches in the World Cup 2007.

The International Cricket Council announced match officials of warm-up matches and the group stages of the mega event. The salient feature of these appointments is that four group of officials — each comprising four umpires and two match referees — will oversee preliminary phase of the World Cup which starts from March 13.

The list of umpires and referees for the later stages of the tournament will be announced at the end of the of group stage.

Apart from supervising in the West Indies-Pakistan opener at Sabina Park, Broad will take charge of Pakistan’s remaining matches against Ireland and Zimbabwe on March 17 and 21, respectively.

Broad is one of seven match referees nominated with Clive Lloyd a notable absentee because of his involvement with West Indies team as their current manager. The other referees on the World Cup panel are Jeff Crowe (New Zealand), Alan Hurst (Australia), Ranjan Madugalle and Roshan Mahanama (both Sri Lanka), Mike Procter (South Africa) and Javagal Srinath (India).

The 16-member World Cup umpires’ panel, which includes nine elite panel officials, is headed by West Indian Steve Bucknor, who is due to stand in his fifth World Cup, South Africa’s Rudi Koertzen and Simon Taufel, the Australian who has been ICCs umpire of the year thrice in succession.

Apart from these three, the umpires’ panel comprises Aleem Dar and Asad Rauf (both from Pakistan), Mark Benson and Ian Gould (England), Billy Bowden and Tony Hill (New Zealand), Daryl Harper, Steve Davis and Peter Parker (Australia), Ian Howell and Brian Jerling (South Africa), Billy Doctrove (West Indies) and Asoka de Silva (Sri Lanka).

Each of the 16 umpires will stand in two warm-up matches that are to begin from Monday, but the match referees will not officiate in any of these matches.

Nigel Llong of England, India’s Suresh Shastri and Russell Tiffin of Zimbabwe — all members of the ICC international panel of umpires — have been named as reserve umpires for the group stage of the tournament.

Among the high-profile group stage fixtures, the game between West Indies and Pakistan will be supervised by umpires Taufel and Bowden. Likewise the England-New Zealand March 16 clash in St Lucia will be officiated by Koertzen and Asad Rauf, the March 23 India-Sri Lanka tie in Port-of-Spain by Aleem Dar and Harper and the much-awaited Australia-South Africa March 24 confrontation in St Kitts by Bucknor and Benson.
