ISLAMABAD, April 19: Pakistan and Argentina have agreed to cooperate in identified areas of science and technology.
A decision to this effect was taken on Thursday in a joint meeting of Pakistan-Argentina commission for promotion of science and technology between the two countries, says a press release.
According to the understanding between the two sides, the two countries will cooperate in the following fields: agro-industry, biotechnology-biomass/bio-fuels, agriculture in arid areas, ocean research, solar energy, irrigation methods, herbaceous medicine, clean technologies-chemicals, food technologies, pharmaceuticals, paints, leather etc. science, technology and innovation (material, equipment labs), exchange of STI policy experts.
Pakistan’s side was represented by Engineer Parvez Butt, Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, while Argentinean side was represented by Dr Lino Baranao, chairman of the National Agency for the Promotion of Science and technology. Mr Rodolfo Martin Saravia, Ambassador of Argentina, was also present during the meeting.
The ministry of science and technology also plans to set up a number of small scale/semi-industrial production centres attached to most of its R&D Institutes. There would also be collaboration in the establishment of these semi-industrial plants through sharing of cooperation between Pakistan and Argentina.
In his opening remarks, Mr Pervez Butt emphasised the need for focusing on few areas in the beginning between the two countries. He stressed for semi-industrial scale production.
Dr Lino Baranao, chairman of the National Agency for the Promotion of Science and Technology, in his opening remarks underlined the need for user-inspired technological research.
He also stressed the need for bankable feasibility and market research for starting semi-industrial manufacturing.
The chairman said a joint venture company may also need to be set up. He said Argentina has a lot of experience in consumer electronics and CNG technology, medical lab equipment and manufacturing etc. Discussion will continue for inclusion of more areas for cooperation while agreement signing will take place on April 21.
