KARACHI: 1,700 primary teachers likely to be promoted

KARACHI, April 19: About 1,700 primary school teachers in the province are likely to be promoted soon to BPS-14 from their present grade, BPS-9, PPI learnt here on Thursday.

According to sources in the education department, a committee was constituted a couple of days back to review the matter.

Education Secretary Sabhago Khan Jatoi heads the committee which has been told to submit its report within a week after evaluating procedure to promote these teachers as per their qualification and experience.

It may be recalled that the matter of primary school teachers’ promotion has been pending for long and there has been considerable unrest among the deserving teachers due to the inaction by the authorities in this regard.

A delegation of primary school teachers led by Muneer Ahmed Bhatti called on Minister for Education Dr Hamida Khuhro on Wednesday and was assured of an early solution to their problem. Dr Khuhro advised teachers not to indulge in politics and keep their educational institutions away from such activities.

She said it was necessary to pay due attention to imparting education to students so that they could concentrate on their studies.

Subagho Khan Jatoi said that EDOs (Education) would be asked to keep in touch with the representatives of teachers at district level with regard to addressing their problems. He said a meeting between EDOs and teachers representatives would be held soon.

SPLA: The Sindh Professors & Lecturers Association has expressed its resentment over the government’s indifference to the demand of granting due promotion to professors and lecturers, saying that the authorities concerned have been playing tricks for the past two years to keep the matter pending.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Prof Syed Riaz Ahsan, Prof Liaqat Aziz, Prof Manzoor Hussain Chishti, Prof Agha Khalid, Prof Athar Hussain Mirza, Prof Ayub Murree and Prof Iftikhar Muhammad Aazmi said that over 300 assistant professors in BPS-18 were being denied promotion although many posts in BPS-19 were lying vacant.

Last year, over 50 senior lecturers were not given due promotion and, instead, priority was given to junior lecturers, they said, adding that 60 posts in BPS-20 were still lying vacant in collegiate cadre.

They appealed to the governor, chief minister and chief secretary to issue directives to the authorities concerned for the promotion of 500 professors and lecturers in order to end unrest among them.—PPI
