Hyderabad police book 18 lawyers : Case against Karachi advocates slammed

HYDERABAD, April 19: Police booked 18 lawyers including office-bearers of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) Hyderabad and Hyderabad District Bar Association (HDBA) on charges of burning an effigy of Gen Pervez Musharraf as their colleagues continued boycott of court proceedings on Thursday to express solidarity with Chief Justice of Pakistan and condemn registration of a case against Karachi lawyers.
The SHO of Cantonment police station Nawaz Arain lodged a case late on Wednesday night under sections 124-A, 147, 148, 149, 341 PPC against HCBA President Abdul Sattar Kazi, HCBA General Secretary Allah Bachayo Soomro, HDBA President Abdul Aziz Sheikh, HDBA General Secretary Noorul Haq Qureshi, HDBA Vice-President Abdul Khaliq Leghari, member of Sindh Bar Council Fazal Qadir Memon and several others.
The SHO said that they raised slogans against the government and president and in favour of Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. They incited others to raise slogans, blocked the road for sometime and burnt an effigy of Gen Pervez Musharraf in uniform. It was torched by Sultan Sheikh advocate causing stampede in the process, he said.
The HDBA held a general body meeting on Thursday attended by Qazi Abdul Sattar, Allah Bachayo Soomro, Fazal Qadir Memon and Abdul Khaliq Leghari to condemn the registration of FIR. Over 50 lawyers staged a token hunger strike outside the Civil Courts building in support of non-functional CJP.
HDBA president and general secretary said that they would not seek pre-arrest bail and were ready to go to jail. They had faced such cases during MRD agitation so they were not afraid of them, they said.
LAWYERS SLAMMED: The Pervez Musharraf Foundation Chairperson Tasnim Zohra led a demonstration outside the local press club in protest against torching of an effigy of the president by lawyers.
The protesters raised slogans in support of the president and said that those who had burnt the president’s effigy were enemies of the country. The lawyers were damaging the country's prestige, they said.

They condemned registration of a case against the Karachi Bar Association president and other office-bearers who were booked for staging a rally on Wednesday to express solidarity with the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Our Nawabshah correspondent adds: Lawyers boycotted court proceedings and brought out a procession on Thursday to express solidarity with the CJP and protest against registration of a case against Karachi lawyers.
The procession started from the premises of the Sessions Court and terminated at the press club after passing through main thoroughfares of the city.
Nawabshah District Bar Association Vice- President Mushtaq Arain, Ameer Ali Mahesar and Hassan Tariq said that lawyers were united to ensure supremacy of law and their struggle would continue till the reinstatement of the CJP. They demanded withdrawal of cases against Karachi lawyers.
