MULTAN, April 19: SSP Operations Munir Chishti on Thursday deputed SP investigations Shaukat Abbas to inquire into the death of a suspect allegedly by police torture.

Complainant Noor Muhammad had informed the police that he had attacked Hafiz Muhammad Naeem with a stone when he was trying to snatch cell phone from him at pistol point in Gulgasht police precinct a few days ago.

Relatives of the deceased, however, alleged that Naeem died of police torture.

The Gulgasht police said Naeem had died by the time they reached the emergency ward of Nishter hospital.

After perusing the case file and keeping in view the allegation of police torture levelled by the relatives of the deceased, SSP Operations Munir Chishti has directed the SP investigations to conduct an inquiry and submit report to him within three days.

Arrested: The cantonment police on Thursday arrested a man on the charge of killing a school principal by throwing acid on him last year.

Cantonment ASP Hasan Khan told newsmen that two motorcyclists had thrown acid on the principal of a private school, Ubaidur Rehman, in Basti Khudadad in October last year. Two boys Wajahat and Hammad Zafar, who were passing by at that time, also sustained burns.

The principal died of burn wounds and a case was registered against two unidentified men.

He said accused Moin was arrested recently who confessed to acid throwing during interrogation. His accomplice Abdul Ghaffar was still at large, he added.

He said Moin told police that they had fled to Karachi after committing the crime.—APP
