Prince Salman completes hat-trick of victories

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, April 25: With the reputation of being a highly reliable runner, fancied-bay-colt Prince Salman stormed home to win the feature event of the Lahore Gymkhana midweek races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

The colt showed indomitable courage, consistency, speed and soundness to complete a hat-trick of victories.

Trained by Sohail Aziz and partnered by riding boy M. Wasim Khan, Prince Salman was backed at 80 to 100.

He beat colt Cobbler by three lengths. Filly Mama Mia and Penzy completed the frame in six starters which were left after withdrawal of Houstan from this fifth and last race of the day.

Earlier, Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards decided to bring down handicap weights of all runners by four pounds on an appeal of the owner of Prince Salman against handicapping of his colt.

The main supporting event which was the fourth race of the day was won by long shot bay filly Mythical who beat odds on favourite colt Royal King by over three lengths.

Remember You and Dam Dama Dam completed the frame among ten starters.

The filly, Mythical, set her own pace and shot into lead soon after the final turn leading into the straight and then was never challenged by any one.

The stewards had changed her rider at the starting gates, replacing Atif Javed with M. Wasim Khan. The change of the rider saw Mythical exploding the myth of Royal King.

Four favourites won in a card of five events. All the events were run over 900 metres.

The opener was won by bay filly Janu, who beat Shah Pari by two-and-a-half lengths. Owned by Munir Ahmad Dar, the even money favourite Janu was piloted by Anjum.

Chestnut colt Cheeta Aya won the second race. He beat My Shanga by over three lengths.

Great Bulbul won the third race to her liking, beating Fearless Boy easily.

The victories of Great Bulbul and Prince Salman earned a good double for owner and trainer duo of Khalid Malik and Sohail Aziz.
