KARACHI, April 25: Reigning national champion Naveen Perwani hammered a century break (102) – second of the contest – on way to register 4-0 win against Irfan R. Khan and reach last 16 with a clean slate in the Style Snooker Championship at Karachi Club on Wednesday.
His stylish break came in the third frame as he was home 82-45, 70-34, 102-5, 69-37. The first century break of the event (127) was cracked by international Imran Shehzad against Farrukh Usman on the opening day.
According to draws and re-seeding at the end of group matches, Naveen is drawn to meet Atif Mughal who went down to Imtiaz Sarwer 1-4 to finish runners up in group ‘H’.
Second seed Vishan Gir, losing finalist of 32nd national championship last month and fourth seed Mohammad Shahid failed to come up to the mark by making early exit.
Making his re-appearance in the circuit after a long layoff, Saleh Mohammad also sneaked in the knock out stage as group ‘C’ champion. He edged out Mohammad Asif 4-0 to chalk up second win. He had lost to Abu Saim in the opener. Saim who was stunned by Shah Khan 4-2 in the last league match finished runners up in the group.
Imran Shehzad, runners up of the same contest last year, rounded off his matches on winning note when he overcame defending champion Mohammad Yousuf 4-3. The two stormed in the next round as winner and runners up.
Meanwhile, AKD has come to the rescue of Imran by sponsoring him in the absence of any employment opportunities for the cueists. Only former national champion Khurram Agha is playing for KPT while snooker celebrity Mohammad Yousuf is still jobless.
